A return to Lyra and Pan's world, following a little adventure of theirs post the events of the main trilogy。 Short but sweet, I certainly would've loved and been happy with more, as only being 50~ pages it will not even last you a full day, but it is still thoroughly enjoyable for what it is。 Despite it's short length it still felt back at home in Lyra's world, in Oxford, touching on what she had done since the events of the final book, and the adventure though smaller in scale felt true to for A return to Lyra and Pan's world, following a little adventure of theirs post the events of the main trilogy。 Short but sweet, I certainly would've loved and been happy with more, as only being 50~ pages it will not even last you a full day, but it is still thoroughly enjoyable for what it is。 Despite it's short length it still felt back at home in Lyra's world, in Oxford, touching on what she had done since the events of the final book, and the adventure though smaller in scale felt true to form, and it was nice to simply see a story solely focused around Lyra and Pan once again after Northern Lights, whereafter other main characters and perspectives were introduced, with so much having changed since then, but that endearing dynamic between them still there at its core。It simply feels like a little treat for fans of the series, and it delivers。 。。。more

Megan Thomas,
A short read, but glorious as always (and the Chris Wormell illustrations in my version are stunning as ever 😊)

Short story bringing us back to that magical realm of dust and daemons, recommended for a light read 🤓

Charlotte Lambourne,
sweet& short - filling in the extra HDM details i long for
Julia,
I noticed a lot more "Easter eggs" on this read through, particularly on the last page, and I'm suddenly very excited for The Book of Dust: Volume Three。 🥳 I noticed a lot more "Easter eggs" on this read through, particularly on the last page, and I'm suddenly very excited for The Book of Dust: Volume Three。 🥳 。。。more

Extremely complimentary to the book of dust books and dark materials trilogy! Highly recommend! Building a great picture and filling in many blanks! ❤️
Jo,
Delightful short story full of adventure。 A beautifully produced little pocket book with gorgeous illustrations and little extras。
Heather,
sweet but insanely short。 leaning heavily on oxford nostalgia
Paulina Palacios Herrera,
Lyra ha crecido y continúa buscando caminos tanto como misterios y nuevos personajes en su vida。 Oxford es un personaje complejo, pesado y expectante。

Nice addition to Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials universe。 Not much to add to the series, though it was nice to see Lyra and Pan again Nice addition to Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials universe。 Not much to add to the series, though it was nice to see Lyra and Pan again 。。。more

A good story and well narrated by the author and others。 Feels like it needs to be embedded in a longer narrative。
Crystal,
I wish there was more to this story, I feel that only fans of this series would really enjoy this companion novel。 I still couldn't give this a bad rating, it was okay。 I wish there was more to this story, I feel that only fans of this series would really enjoy this companion novel。 I still couldn't give this a bad rating, it was okay。 。。。more

There isn't really much to see here。 But I take it the new characters here are relevant in the more recent trilogy。 I'll be waiting for that to be finished before I begin reading it, but I'm looking forward。 There isn't really much to see here。 But I take it the new characters here are relevant in the more recent trilogy。 I'll be waiting for that to be finished before I begin reading it, but I'm looking forward。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 When I found out that there are other books after the amazing triology I couldn't wait to read them。 I wanted it to answer some of my questions and when I read it I was disappointed by how there is a lack of a story and how short it was。 Hopeful the next one in the seris is better When I found out that there are other books after the amazing triology I couldn't wait to read them。 I wanted it to answer some of my questions and when I read it I was disappointed by how there is a lack of a story and how short it was。 Hopeful the next one in the seris is better 。。。more

✨ 3。5 stars ✨As a His Darkest Materials fan, it seems only appropriate that I read all of the works surrounding the northern lights series - the original books, the books of dust and at last, the novellas。 For books like these (novellas), it’s so difficult for me to give them high ratings as fragments of the story are told - but I wouldn’t want to leave them unread。 Surprisingly, I really enjoyed this story - the clever circular narrative of everything having a meaning was really enjoyable to re ✨ 3。5 stars ✨As a His Darkest Materials fan, it seems only appropriate that I read all of the works surrounding the northern lights series - the original books, the books of dust and at last, the novellas。 For books like these (novellas), it’s so difficult for me to give them high ratings as fragments of the story are told - but I wouldn’t want to leave them unread。 Surprisingly, I really enjoyed this story - the clever circular narrative of everything having a meaning was really enjoyable to read and a nice return to the beginning of the story。 。。。more

I first read this book a long time ago and had forgotten what happens。 It's a really nice little story and Lyra, Pan, witches and birds, and it's fun to see characters like Polstead show up now that I know more about him。 This new edition is beautifully illustrated with pleasantly wide spacing。 I first read this book a long time ago and had forgotten what happens。 It's a really nice little story and Lyra, Pan, witches and birds, and it's fun to see characters like Polstead show up now that I know more about him。 This new edition is beautifully illustrated with pleasantly wide spacing。 。。。more
Christina Fyke,
As far as this book goes, it was far too short to be worth the wait at the library。 BUT! It WAS so nice to meet up with Lyra again, and it did peak my interest! I do hope that this little story leads somewhere further。 It's very well written as all His Dark Materials are, it was just extremely short。 As far as this book goes, it was far too short to be worth the wait at the library。 BUT! Nice illustration。 A story about Lyra and how she found a bird daemon, that lead her into danger。Not the usual strange forward children story。 Got a classic feel to it too。

A delightful short read, full of beautiful illustrations in this iteration of the book that really bring the Oxford of His Dark Materials to liveEverything has a meaning, if only we could read itA good old fashioned adventure that made me long for His Dark Materials。 Lyra is sought out by a daemon in the form of a bird and with a connection with a witch。 And the birds in the city in general are acting weird。 The length of this work worked so much better than The Secret Commonwealth did, even tho A delightful short read, full of beautiful illustrations in this iteration of the book that really bring the Oxford of His Dark Materials to liveEverything has a meaning, if only we could read itA good old fashioned adventure that made me long for His Dark Materials。 Lyra is sought out by a daemon in the form of a bird and with a connection with a witch。 And the birds in the city in general are acting weird。 The length of this work worked so much better than The Secret Commonwealth did, even though it has similar themes (besides Lyra being depressed and at odds with her daemon) and a bit of foreshadowing towards the Book of Dust in it。 Let's hope Philip Pullman gets back to his initial trilogy level with the last book of the new series! 。。。more

I read this for the first time after having read both His Dark Materials and the first two Books of Dust。 Knowing what happens in both, this was a great set-up and bridge between the two。 Dr。 Polstead, or Malcolm, as we get to know him later in the Book of Dust series, appears here, as does Sebastian Makepeace, the alchemist。 I appreciated the illustrated edition as there were illustrations in the back that tie this novella in with the other two series。 Really delightful and a quick read, would I read this for the first time after having read both His Dark Materials and the first two Books of Dust。 Knowing what happens in both, this was a great set-up and bridge between the two。 Dr。 Polstead, or Malcolm, as we get to know him later in the Book of Dust series, appears here, as does Sebastian Makepeace, the alchemist。 I appreciated the illustrated edition as there were illustrations in the back that tie this novella in with the other two series。 Really delightful and a quick read, would recommend to any fans of His Dark Materials。 。。。more

Nice book from the Dark Materials universe。 Nice but perhaps too short, was a little disappointed by the length。 Good while it lasted though。

3。5 stars "'Everything means something,' Lyra said severely。 'We just have to find out how to read it。'" Lyra's Oxford is pretty short, but it was nice to get back into this world for a quick visit with Lyra and Pantalaimon。 My favourite part was definitely when Lyra channelled Will to feel brave。 It was a sweet homage to their connection lasting beyond their forced separation。All of the alchemy stuff was a strange misdirect from the rest of everything that happened in the His Dark Materia 3。5 stars "'Everything means something,' Lyra said severely。 'We just have to find out how to read it。'" Lyra's Oxford is pretty short, but it was nice to get back into this world for a quick visit with Lyra and Pantalaimon。 My favourite part was definitely when Lyra channelled Will to feel brave。 It was a sweet homage to their connection lasting beyond their forced separation。All of the alchemy stuff was a strange misdirect from the rest of everything that happened in the His Dark Materials series。 I know it's a novella, but it only makes sense if this is the setup for something else moving forward。 Maybe the Book of Dust series?
